It is entirely possible that something went wrong - this is an old drive after all. I checked the manuals you linked to (thanks!) and looked at the output of the format attempts; both the format cdb and format parameter list looks sane to me, yet the response is "illegal parameter" and / or "Invalid field in parameter list". --Torfinn (talk) 17:01, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
it turned out to be a case of "wrong tool". sg_format didn't handle the drive properly, but setblocksize did. --Torfinn (talk) 18:27, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
